Sculpture is such a cool art form

My grandmother was a sculptor. Her artwork was quite amazing, she started in limestone & then moved into granite, wood & all types of stone she’d pick up from a local quarry. I remember the first time she let me use her tools & carve a piece of stone.  It was so much harder than I’d imagined & it made me appreciate her work even as a young girl. I have a lot of my grandmother’s work, and want to acquire more sculpture, but it can be quite expensive. I saw this marble sculpture on 1st dibs today & it made me think of her. Art really is amazing in rock form. I love it.

Perfect Oatmeal Muffins

I’ve had this muffin recipe on the brain for a few weeks, and finally got the chance to make them this morning, and they turned out great. Thanks to 101 Cookbooks for the delectable recipe. Just as Heidi said, they are not too sweet, but the delicious and delicate crumble on top adds just the right amt. of sweet. The insides were moist & you could taste the yogurt as well, and they were approved by the little man. I think next time I”ll add a bit of fruit puree for color and a little more sweet. Yum!

The Best of the Chocolate Show NYC

A dear friend who is studying cake decorating and the art of sugar asked me to go to The NYC Chocolate Show. I happily agreed, as it’s a rare weekend I take off anytime for adult-only activities and the Chocolate Show seemed like an ok-enough activity. Plus I thought you people might like to hear about some good chocolate pre-holiday. Overall the show was like a mini-convention. Loads of people and not near as many venders as I expected, but there were some winners peppered among the crowds. I decided to do the entire show before I purchased anything, as the husband made it very clear: bring back samples. I was near sick with tastings halfway through, but soldiered on. It also became very clear what stood out from the pack. Now let me preface & say this…..chocolate is in the eye of the beholder. I happen to like it more pure with less sugar and DARK. The minute I tasted my favorite, it became clear that nobody matched up to them, and that was Chocolate at Cotton Tree Lodge. Apparently their big sell is the lodge in Brazil where you can go stay at their jungle retreat and make & eat chocolate from the source.  This did not sound like a bad idea and, their chocolate was by far the best at the show. I tried the 70% dark and it was amazing. Smooth, lightly fruity & just delicious. Some of my next favorite companies were for all kinds of reasons, some taste, some look & some with inventive ideas. I really enjoyed No Chewing Allowed, their chocolate truffles were just lovely.  A bit on the sweeter side, but whose going to not want that! They melted amazingly in your mouth (hence the name) and the look and feel of their entire brand & packaging was a sure standout….I would rate this as a great little holiday gift for kids of all ages (aka adults). Another really great idea & company standout was Rogue Confections. Rogue took a simple but great concept & really ran with it, they take their inspiration from vintage textiles & old-school postcards & present their chocolate in such a unique way. They’re retro/vintage feel was a sure standout.  I totally dug the chocolate discs, mini-disc lolli’s, and chocolate postcards. What a great idea for a local wedding or again a great holiday gift. Really loved these guys! I have to give a minor shout out to Antidote Chocolate. By far the most design forward beautiful packaging at the show, and innovative flavours: Ginger & gooseberry, Lavender & Red Salt, Banana & Cayenne…you get the point. Another standout for taste & look was the Grenada Chocolate Company. The taste was dark & rich and clean. They had a very intense flavour and I loved the island packaging. My final choice of the day was not about chocolate, in fact it was related to my all time favorite: caramels. Yes Liddabit Sweets were the real deal. At first I left the table due to my own hold ups about corn syrup, but the flavour was so darn great I went back twice and finally got up the nerve to ask them about the corn syrup- apparently either corn syrup or glucose syrup is used to help with crystallization.Ok I can get with that….just not so often, but these people really got the whole salty sweet combination- I finished my bag of caramels alreay (note the show was yesterday!). Overall a fun trip, though an expensive day if you add the ticket & all the purchases..but note: the husband was happy. (I purchased some old favorites: Francois Pralus & Michel Cluizel.)

Chic & Cheap holiday find!

Part of me is not sure i should share this AWESOME holiday gift.  At a mere $10 it’s a steal.  Granted it’s made out of paper…but I just love it. I think I may have to have tons of them.  On my list for sure.  Check out Etsy shop etco & their adorable white & gold mini-bowl. Maybe you need a ring holder at your bedside, or a lovely paperclip holder…so may options. I also really dig the larger gold & white bowl, and the black bowls.  Ok it’s clear i like these guys! p.s. I can’t get behind their rabbits foot, but to each his/her own….trying not to place judgement.

Add a little green into your day- Gotham Greens that is.

I’ll admit I’ve seen Gotham Greens on the shelf for a bit and ignored them.  Just another lettuce produce I figured, not organic…move on.  Then a few days ago the lovely packaging and vibrant basil caught my eye again. I had more time this day and decided to dig into the small print…I was happily introduced to an innovative & sustainable new product and business that I had to tell you guys about.  Four months into harvesting, Gotham Greens is running an uber-cool business, harvesting greens on a Greenpoint, Brooklyn rooftop (yes you read that right- a ROOF TOP!).  Their products are free of any harmful chemical pesticides, insecticides or herbicides–into my cart they went. It’s not often as the weather is getting cooler that I have the option to get lovely basil that’s LOCAL into my meals. I’m so impressed with the taste, look, and even more the overall business direction. If you want to support NYC local business, buy yourself some Greens! I snipped a load of the basil into a yummy tofu stirfry & loaded it up with fresh ginger and kale, yum!

Breakfast No!

I’m not sure how many of you mom’s out there experience the same problem, but a mother of a toddler will relate…’No’ seems to be the first answer to everything, even when the little buggers mean ‘yes’, ‘maybe’, ‘not sure’, ‘I think so’ etc. For some reason in our house the morning is a particularly strong ‘no’ time of day.  It goes something like this, “Do you want french toast for breakfast?’ answer: “No”, “Do you want cereal?” answer: “No”, and then I throw in my favorite, “Do you want Racoon na na’s” answer: “Yes” My husband thinks I’m crazy, but it always tells me to go with my gut & not listen to captain No!  I’ve also gotten around the breakfast no, by personally inviting a lot of friends over to east (see pic above)– the more the merrier & you’d be surprised how much it helps us get every last bit eaten. We welcome the zoo at our table any time of day- it make meal time fun & successful (aka gets food into mr. picky)

Score me a Solder!

Ok, these have to be the most amazing terrariums I’ve seen yet. Score & Solder have a lovely geometric line of planters & terrariums that are so innovative and chic. Designed by Matthew Cleland, a self-proclaimed traveling gypsy, Matthew makes the terrariums, hanging cubes & jewelry is coming soon. Each item is hand-made.  I must have one! Oh & the bonus: each terrarium comes with quartz, rocks, activated charcoal & soil–score!

Leaf Shadows

I was walking home in the evening with my family by Lincoln Center, and was noticing how the lights made these lovely leaf shadows with the trees. They were like natural paintings, and were truly inspiring and beautiful. The fern like trees were lightly shaking in the wind, which made them feel almost alive, and watching their shadows was like being caught up in a beautiful silent film. The ginkgo tree on the other hand was a bit different and more graphic, which was also super cool. My little one loved seeing the lights and shadows, I’m not sure he fully understands yet, but we managed to throw in some hand shadow-puppet birds for full affect. I like the feel of these so much they may inspire a new line of stationery. Or maybe some prints…we shall see.

Painting Pumpkins with 2 Year olds!

So after our lovely farm weekend, where we got these great pumpkins, I promised my little one we’d paint them…and that we did. Note to all you mom’s out there- a promise to a 2 year old does not go forgotten, at least in this house. I got some non-toxic paint, which sorta didn’t work, as poster paint apparently peels off pumpkins…annoying, but hopefully they’ll at least last through the holiday. It was a total blast. A few brushes, a patient mom, and some pumpkins & voila’ a super fun afternoon art activity. I wasn’t sure it’d work as he loses interest halfway through certain projects, but he was all in…and quite creative with his color choices. Also, since i am a bit OCD, I was also thrilled he didn’t do too much brush/paint mixing….I made sure to have a few brushes to avoid the typical muddy color we get sometimes when he blends all colors together. I started my own pumpkin, but due to toddler supervision have only finished halfway…I’ll show that creative genius shortly (:

Pick a winner

I had the most glorious day today. My husband, son & I planned to meet friends at an apple picking farm today, at the last minute I called just to confirm all was set & the farm told me NO more apples! They were done for the season.  Quickly I scrambled to find another farm to go to and luckily not only did we find one, thanks to Mommy Poppins we found another one quick. While this one was farther, We went to Terhune Orchards in princeton, NJ and it was beyond a lovely place. They have a well run orchard and about 2 miles down the road a super family friendly farm.  What was so great was it was authentic. The country felt like country, the featured fun elements (candied apples, pumpkin picking, hayrides, corn maize etc.) were just perfect-  there was nothing too commercial, they had a great band, and farm animals to boot.  Both boys (and grown-ups) had a blast & within minutes our little one sacked out in the car–truly a perfect day. We came home with enough apples to feed 6 families, so stay tuned for what I end up making.  They only had granny smiths &  Stayman Winesaps available, which I’;d never had before, but what a lovely apple- beyond crisp, and almost a hint of citrus- loved it! We also got a bunch of pumpkins for painting and gourds for me (:  If you & your family are looking for a great adventure, get there! It’s a bit far, It was about 1.5 hours door to door from our apartment, but worth the trip..I believe they have a few more weekends of apple picking befoe the end of the season.
