I have an issue with eating. While I love to cook (most of the time) I am struggling with eating lately. maybe it’s the intense summer heat, maybe it’s laziness, maybe i”m in a food rut. Do you ever get those?! I just read about this “eat for energy timeline” in Real Simple this month, and today is the first day I am following it. It’s quite simple…it just makes you eat a lot of little meals, which I know is the best thing for my metabolism. Start 7:15 drink water -check, 7:45 coffee- I skip this don’t do coffee, I did my breakfast then instead – check, I am now off to the gym 8:45 (I inserted this- go me!), and then at 10:15 it says snack on some nuts- ok gonna do it. Ok, so make me stick to this ok. I mean really…OK OK OK I’m going to stick to this. Off to gym- i said that right?!

Summer Watermelon Spontaneity

I bought the most delicious seedless organic watermelon yesterday, and it’s been burning a hole in my brain. I LOVE LOVE LOVE watermelon. Was I not clear how much I LOVE it? Any chance I get I have watermelon juice (home made & bought at any spanish place (yummy agua fresca)). Lately I’ve been meaning to use watermelon in a savory way, but haven’t gotten around to it…until today. After the gym I was hungry, and I am sick and tired of my same old veggie food, so I decided to not be lazy and make a delicious summer meal with watermelon as the star. To be honest I was cutting up melon for my boy, as I am busy preparing 3 meals and 2 snacks a day for him, no surprise I am not into cooking for myself at this point. So I just grabbed a few things in the fridge and assembled a lovely, simple salad: The base was romaine lettuce, radicchio, and arugula (all organic), and cut up some uber-fresh watermelon on top. Then I grilled some haloumi cheese (for those of you that aren’t familiar with this greek/cyprus yummy cheese- you need to be. It is made from sheep & goat cheeses and has some mint mixed in and is a perfect grilling cheese), another note these is no animal rennet in it, which is not an easy task to find, so I keep it on hand always. I drizzled some extra virgin olive oil on top, some black pepper, a light splash of rice vinegar and a healthy squeeze of fresh lemon – voila’ a delicious summer meal with my favorite melon. I must say it was pretty darn good! *I am showing you both before & after cheese shots here as some of you might not dig the mixture, but the salty, sweet & tart was divine.

Yummy Feet
For Father’s Day Mr. W had a great idea. Lets stamp my feet and give a pic to daddy – perfect! We did it & he loved it- score. I lined the print in 2 different beautiful papers from Kate’s Paperie and found the most beautiful italian frame to put it in to hang in our bedroom…Baby feet are just plain the BEST. Given that it took me almost a year to stamp them….i think it was still worth it.

I Covet Friday’s: It’s hot- get me some Ices!!
It’s hot outside. Like really hot. It’s only about 85 degrees, but this mama is sweating bullets. All that comes to mind is I WANT ICES. Not that this is a huge deviation from regular days. I crave ices period. When I was pregnant I would travel a few miles on foot to get my favorite ices (bubblegum & honeydew)..but that’s a longer story. I usually like coco helado (the spanish ices (I dig coconut) on every street corner in NYC) – so much so that I sometimes would get it twice a day…yes this is the reason I have never been my ideal weight. However, I will settle for any kind of cold ice flavored treat: Granita, italian ices & more. This brings me to what I covet: the Zoku quick pop maker. OMG – i need to have this. It apparently makes pops in as little as 7 minutes. I mean I’ll believe that when I taste it, but I’m willing to try. I think for father’s day I am getting me a present!! I am also coveting this ice crusher (currently on sale) at Sur La Table. I think this would be perfect for a summer party- and the perfect way to get an arm workout pre-devouring. There is quite a trend in shaved ice these days. I recently read about a super cool shaved ice queen via design sponge. Th NY times also did a great story about shaved ice. This trend has always been my interest, long before it became trendy, I am really loving the new inspired flavors i keep seeing: vanilla & nutmeg, basil and watermelon etc. I am going to take inspiration and come up with a few of my own….canteloupe and lemon maybe or even nectarine and lime, or maybe blackberry and tarragon….YUMMY, oh & you must check out some of these crazy delicious inspired flavours. ok I am going out for some ices now.

Getting ready for the Birthday Bash
Well, I can’t even believe we are almost one month away from Mr. W’s first birthday. This has been the shortest year with the most amount of change in my entire life….and by far the best. I am enjoying thinking of fun ways to celebrate my boy’s birthday, and really the joy that he has brought into our lives. My husband and i were just saying last night how lucky we are to have so much fun with our little guy. Since he’s such a little guy, most of the details are really for me, so I am just having a ball at browsing & deciding what to choose. I have chosen a loose theme incorporating animals and circus, i don’t like everything matchy matchy, so I am just looking for fun and cute and kid-friendly. I ordered the invites from Night Owl Paper Goods. If you want some amazing wood cards or custom work done check them out. When they arrive I’ll post a pic. I am also looking at having Hello Super 8 shoot us a super cool film of the day- it’s the most expensive part of the day, but i think it’ll be worth it…AND since it’s also my birthday that day, it’s really a present to myself. Since last years gift (the baby) was the best gift I could EVER receive, I figured I’d try and come close. I am also looking at a few fun party items, not sure which I will choose: This super cute Animal centerpiece and the matching Meri Meri garland, dying for this adorable party hat to come back into stock, I may do mini-cupcakes and these are the perfect cupcake tapers. I may also have to take inspiration from the sweet master, Amy Atlas for set up ideas, and generally get creative with kid goodies and more. Stay tuned as I get it all together. p.s. do you think I could get my husband to work out these awesome balloon animals?
Had to have it: Sustainable Cork Board
Since I had my baby, my office space has been relegated to a very very small corner in my living room. It’s amazing the amount of work I can get done in a 36″ square area, but let me be clear I need more…One way i am working to make the space more deal-able is by making it more functional while still attractive. I’ve been avoiding certain things as I really don’t dig seeing all the work stuff in the middle of my home. However, I am trying to be clever and fun about it & these sustainable cork boards designed by Poko Design are just the thing. Having been designed from animals affected by global warming, 2% of the proceeds is donated to treenation. How cool is that. For $20 you can’t go wrong. Now i can get all these tears up for inspiration. I ordered two of the birds to face one another. I may even paint them….I’ll keep you posted and take a picture once they are in full effect.

You better WERK! – Plywerk that is.
As I’ve mentioned here before I have been meaning to get a bunch of my images printed & mounted. This is an ongoing task as making the choices of how to print and what to print and where to hang etc, when it is for yourself and not a client, is quite hard. The possibilities are endless and that makes things complicated for a gal like me that likes a lot of things and has a lot of ideas. This brings me to tell you about a great company that I’ve been watching: Plywerk. Love them. based in Portland, these guys have made a really great product of wood panels cut for art mounting and hanging. Their panels come in about 30 different sizes and they offer over 10 different types of photo papers for them to print and mount your artwork. They also have a super informative user-friendly site to make ordering simple. I chose 2 of the pieces from my environment series as 12X12 3/4″ bamboo. I think they came out really great. I am also going to test out some more work smaller and larger, and i’ll keep you posted. Truly a really great product.
